Is Obito Uchiha redeemable?

And what makes this even more absurdly true is that Obito only uses this name as proof that people don’t want to plumb the depths of essence, and his theory that the entire world only knows each other at a risible level of scattered attributes seems to be true, take his former best friend: of all the times they encounter each other in the ninja world, as long as he wears a mask and claims to be Madara Uchiha, Kakashi takes it to be true.

After it is agreed, Mephisto and Faust start working together and their travels take them to a winehouse in Germany. There are three men downstairs who are drinking, and Mephisto asks them what - out of all the drinks in all the land - they would desire most; for each man they are handed their dream beverage, downing glass after glass, but there is a catch, that they shouldn’t spill a single drop.

Ironically, that was a tale of caring for tailed beasts as much as a man, whereas the Hyuga were known for caring for man in the same way as beasts. In Shukaku’s first exchange with Gaara, where the young boy is surprised by his hatred for humans, he asked

“ You're no sooner summoned into life and enjoy a day's serenity than you yearn, from dizzying steps, for a place of hurt and pain. Don't you care for us at all? Is the joy we share a dream?”.

A death that could’ve been avoided, but in all cases they chose to sacrifice themselves or risk life for greatness. It was the case for Obito, and he made sure it would be the case for Naruto; the suddenness and shock of Neji’s death mirrors Rin’s, and this is the first time he has watched somebody pass away in his arms as Gaara and Kakashi had died before he got to them.

In the flashback to Obito’s time in isolation, immediately after the incident during the war. He wakes up to see some grey, dishevelled face looming over his bedside saying he is neither living nor dead, currently trapped between two worlds. He tries to get up but unsurprisingly it’s unbearably painful to move.

He won’t be able to leave until Madara is assured that the only contact he makes with “the wider world” shall break him once and forever and lead him into the dark world of despair that Madara wants him to be in.

And for this act of kindness he expects Obito to repay his debt. As you know, Madara doesn’t do anything for free.

The hilarious fact that the entire ninja world could be brought to declare war on “Madara Uchiha” is proof that nobody knows anything about anyone.

Faust wanted to leave whilst they drank, but Mephisto was insistent -

There is a similar motif in the movie Pinocchio of all places, where the main villain, the Coachman, keeps donkeys trapped in boxes and breaks them psychologically before sending them off to work in the salt mines, the circus and used essentially as slaves.

To win her heart, the two of them begin plotting their moves and Mephisto works to gather the most beautiful jewels, so he can place them in her room and be astounded by their beauty. After some games, soon enough she meets Faust, and all the poetry, plays and theatres are no match for the joys of walking together and being intimate; they talk a lot and whilst she loves his company, whenever she sees Mephisto her blood runs cold “as soon as he steps in the door his expressions’ half of mockery and half of anger”. She goes on to say that he seems incapable of loving anyone, and you could think of these conversations as analogues of Obito and Rin talking about his Mephistophelian side injected in him by Madara and what he has grown into.

Basically the devil in simple terms.

Now that his ambitions, his Will and plan are clearly laid out he hands Obito his identity and goes to sleep; it’s more than just trusting him, for now he knows for a fact that Obito’s feelings of suffering and emptiness will not leave him, he can be sure he shall strive diligently to bring his dream into fruition. He severs his connection to this world and gives that title to Obito.

Now, Madara’s words enter to his mind…

You should be able to see the clear inversion with Rin, for after he lost her his sole moment of happiness and joy was gone and he was sure that the world had become the one which Mephisto ( Madara) believed.

The beginning of their ascension into politics is reminiscent of Obito’s manipulation of Yagura in that he didn’t even notice he had been controlled and that was the starting point for grander plans. The Akatsuki was started in the Rain by Nagato, Yahiko and Konan but when they started to grow it seems the Mist served as another centre of operations - hence the accusations that were laid at the Mist in the 5 - kage Summit.

Madara knew he’d return as he had already planned, and that’s when he would take his repayment.

He wakes up and plans to go to Greece and meet Helen. And as you could expect, Mephisto does some meddling here as well and goes up to her first, informing her that the Greek King Meneleus who she is at war with is coming to kill her - and he recommends they take the service of another Chieftain whixh is Faust who shall protect them. They finally speak, and whilst she has never heard someone speaking in rhymes like Faust, she finds it oddly charming. He beckons her to come with him and flee.

The moment where the mask truly comes off is when both you and Obito realize who he really was. He remembers that he was indeed Obito Uchiha from The Leaf.

But in order to get there they will need to develop a genjutsu that will be reflected off of the moon, casting a dream upon the world, but they will need the tailed beasts and they shall need to manipulate Nagato - the boy he implanted his Rinnegan into just the same way Madara manipulated him here.

How can the citizens of Russia accept the enormous difference between people? The richest 500 Russians own more than the poorest 99.8% of the entire Russian population combined. Why don't we see any protests?

Mephisto had given Faust the bargain, he had agreed of his own free will and lost; however, the angels came in and swooped the soul before it could be taken!

In the story of Bunpuku - the monk who was the jinchuriki of Shukaku before it was given to Gaara. Speaking with the tailed beast in the confines of prison, he meditated and would open his palms to reveal the two Kanji for love: heart and acceptance. The same is etched on Gaara’s forehead, and there did come a day when someone knew the true meaning of that word.

Faust is skeptical that he can help, but here comes Mephisto who’ll summon the foulest demons for the job. As planned, the war is successful and Faust is given some coastal land by the Emperor; but, there is one cottage that’s owned by an old couple that is yet to be his.

CDC Health Advisory Says This 'Ongoing Risk' Leaves Travelers Vulnerable on Planes, Trains, Public Transport, and More - Travel + Leisure

“who forged the Emperor’s signature to this”

Obito wishes of creating the perfectly tailored dream world, where animals can get whatever they please and there is never a moment of despair without redemption, challenge without success but stepping outside the boundary will lead to your demise!

This parallels so well with the way Obito saw Rin.

Later in the story, Mephisto tries to introduce himself with an Emperor, initially as a jester but upon learning their financial troubles he gives some advice on mining to exploit the country’s natural resources and suggests they also use paper money, giving the people the illusion of wealth, when in reality they’re no better off. After a celebration at the supposed stabilisation of the economy, the two of them meet once more with the Emperor alongside his chancellor and courtiers who arehappywith the results; but upon hearing that he signed all this yesterday, the Emperor can’t believe it -

Incorporated into different flashbacks is the fact she addresses his wounds, and he never thought that much about the scars he got along the way as they were moving as a team. The Eternal Feminine was Faust’s “Why” as it represented that symbol of benevolence, and Obito encapsulates that in her alongside his promise:

Faust takes on Mephisto’s Will to manipulate and manages to seduce her into making love - with the worry of her mother waking up assuaged by a “sleeping potion”: three drops of which is enough to stop her from noticing.

He foolishly sends Mephisto of all people and his goons to evict the couple and relocate them into a palace away from his Kingdom, but they end up killing them instead. Faust had managed to rationalise their eviction in that he was giving them a grander, better palace in return for a complete landmass, but now they’re dead which has left him genuinely distraught.

“a sight to drive me to despair, this aimless strength of the elemental forces”.

THANKS FOR READING!!

Philemon and Baucis don’t trust this Emperor and think foul play has earned him the victory, refusing all offers on their house or relocation to a larger home. They love their quaint and simple routine of going to the local chapel and are happy with it. The bells that ring where they pray annoy Faust constantly, and they speak to the inability to partake in the natural life, the simplicity which stands in stark contrast to his utopia. It’s a nice metaphor that translates to how Obito is irked by the simple principle of bonds that Naruto has and feels he cannot participate as he’s committed himself to this path; it’s why he selfishly wants to run them into the ground with Ten-Tails’ attacks, so they may despair and plead with him to open the world of dreams.

“all is darkness in his heart, and however great his treasures, there's no joy in their possession. Good and bad luck both depress him, he is starving though there's plenty”.

“I told you, things don’t go as planned. You’ll eventually catch on too”

The intendent reminds him that he did, and now he must accept it.

“But… you exist to protect my village, don’t you?” -

Now you can see the Madara/Obito parallels, for he thinks everything in this reality is quintessentially flawed, but destruction isn’t the answer - instead, a mercy shall be placed upon humanity!

One needs to realize that redemption is not perfection. The redeemed must realize their flaws.

Helen and Faust have a child, Euphorion, but he has inherited his relentless striving, and the beatific, romantic ideals of Helen -

The wager is centered on the idea that, from Faust’s POV, he will never say the words “Oh moment, thou art so fair!” and the feeling of restlessness shall go, but Mephisto believes he is capable of providing such a thing but in return he shall take his soul. Obito while playing Madara, is representing both characters from Faust, this wager is an inner psychological battle and that moment where life shall be worthwhile he aims to produce as well, though that will be in a dream.

For where is there certainty?

Faust assures her it isn’t harmful but Mephisto is fully aware his recommendation is a lethal dose. Later, when Faust and Mephisto are making their way to Gretchen’s house, they run into her brother Valentine - and they get into a brief fight where Faust relies on Mephisto’s powers to parry his attacks and the two of them work together to strike him down.

“First wait and see a demonstration of marvelous animal spirits”

So, in order to redeem him, you need to unmask him first.

Ans in Faust, after the sudden death of Euphorion ( Just like the death of Rin), Helen fades away, unable to stomach the pain, and joins up with her son. Despite losing his family, Faust continues striving ever still and this time he has declared war against nature itself. Following the unnecessary death of his child, this rage shall be his final act.

Mephisto declares himself the eternal spirit of negation,

This is one of the major shared motifs, in that the devil will never see adequate justice and thus it only exacerbates the view that things are only tricks, lies and obsequious gamesmanship.

It’s Naruto’s goal to push on and create a dream world right here, where the hearts of his friends who believed in him can rejoice in it too. It was in having the courage to face that suffering that Faust would wrestle with nature, to build a community where people can get together and find a way to live in harmony, despite the knowledge that it won’t be all bliss -

He just needs to accept them. That is the path to redemption.

But after years of mistakes, deaths and siding with the Devil, both Obito and Faust manage to atone in the end.

“I’ve never protected you because I wanted to!”

He also realizes how far he has gone from Rin, as he wanted to keep his promise to her that he'd become Hokage and save the world which mirrors the preeminent principle in Faust that "the eternal feminine shows us the way" and she was the one who took his hand and spurred that call to adventure.

He had managed to stay relatively sane due to their memories and progressed based on that dream of coming back: it started in his mind, then travelled down to his fingertips when he broke out, and shattered when he had to hold Rin’s corpse after taking out everything that stood in his way and her.

So it is indeed a long read…

Finally, he has taken full responsibility for his actions as he realises Mephisto cannot be trusted at all, better late than never right?? Faust starts to regret the path he has taken:

“Let’s create a world, where you exist again”

The story focuses on a man who, with vast amounts of knowledge and decades of study, can’t find anything which interests him for more than a moment, so he resorts to magic to converse with the spirits. This is where Mephisto greets him, to which Faust asks “who are you” and he responds sarcastically by saying:

But upon first landing into his clutches he thinks Madara’s musings of only pain, suffering and futility existing in this reality are just the ramblings of a feckless old man that has become bitter with age and defeat, and he tries to tune out of it. The Zetsu are also trying to get him to understand the master plan, but the Zetsus are smarter than Madara here:

Also, Obito hopes that he will end up like him - as he has seen the many similarities Naruto has with his older self - and refuse to accept this, finally acquiescing. That he would drop his promise of never letting his comrades die and complete the mirrored descent, but Hinata slaps him out of it and reminds him of Neji’s last words.

Well, it’s more like forcibly taking everyone there… and for life too”.

He doesn’t know where in the world he is, where could such a place that allows such evil be other than hell?

Indeed, you can see what happens next is that in their gluttony, wine is spilled and it roars into flame and terrifies the drunkards.

Both Faust and Helen despair at his child climbing so far up -

Faust had lost his bet to Mephisto, and as his soul left the body it was Mephisto’s to snatch - but Heaven interjected and he ascended beyond his clutches, but only because of the petition of someone he had wronged - Gretchen.

But Faust replies that names are still indicative of the person, and so he asks again - who is he?

At the point of death, Obito doesn’t die a criminal, despite all, he tries to make amends with whatever he has got.

Indeed, the only reason why Madara assuaged Obito’s desire to break free was because he set up the entire scene, managing to convince Hidden Mist Shinobi to abduct Rin and plant the tailed beast inside like a trojan horse.

the unnecessary loss of someone dear.

“Starting today you shall be the saviour”

"Rin… was my sole light and hope. After I lost Rin , the world as I saw it changed"

“Brother Neji just said that you hold more than one life in your hands… Do you know what he meant? I will never let my comrades die. Neither those words nor the conviction behind them are lies! For he was able to successfully store them in his heart [...]. It’s not just you, Naruto. We all hold those feelings within our hearts”.

But it ends up being his worst nightmare. He gets through the clearing to see his worst nightmare in front of him, his friend has not only broken his promise, but broken it with his own hands.

A similar thing happens when Naruto speaks to him in the spiritual realm, saying..

Faust admits that one

He remembers that reciprocity which comes naturally from having a shared bond, and whilst it wasn’t Neji’s plan to die in war he will make that sacrifice for him.

His dream is cut short due to the outbreak of another war, as the Emperor has realised the paper money has become worthless, and he is having to fight to protect his throne. If they help him they could possibly be given land for their efforts, which would be the start of his own kingdom.

There is a scene where one donkey who still has a hat and jumper on, signs of individuality, resists and calls for his mother and upon hearing this the Coachman throws him to the side and says he’s not ready yet - he still has a voice. In time it shall temper, and he will soon be without character like the donkeys in boxes.

Faust attempts to summon Helen, but it is only partially successful, but he can still see her beauty clearly and he is spellbound; most of the courtiers are unimpressed for they don’t see the symbolic union at play here of classical and modern, of myths and science and so on. He is trying to get his hands on her, but the phantom shall not be begotten that easily! She strikes him down with thunder and he falls unconscious.

“The fact that you feel pain means that you are still alive”

After hearing that Rin and Kakashi are being attacked and suddenly they’re bending over backwards trying to help him get out of which he doesn’t suspect at all since he was emotionally caught up. They allow him to use one of the Zetsu as an exoskeleton of sorts which allows him to move.

“the real Rin wouldn’t give the time of day to the current Obito”

“and rightly so, since all that gains existence is only fit to be destroyed; that's why it would be best if nothing ever got created”

Things worsen, as Gretchen drowns the child of hers and Faust, and she is sent to prison. He and Mephisto try to break her out but she has realised the scope of her immorality and all that has happened by letting these two into her life, and wants to be judged by God now as she regrets everything.

Obito thinks it’s so stupid he’s speechless and goes back to rehabilitation, trying his best to walk, to move and so forth. Such an idea sounds preposterous because he holds a dream already!

“Now what I want most, want most of all, is to go high, high up in the sky”.

but still, when Obito took some of the Bijuu chakra from Madara, and restored the Nine-Tails into Naruto and saved his life, he was still entangled with Zetsu but realised he didn’t have to ignore and forget his mistakes.

In this private moment, another woman called Care walks in, and frightens Faust for she accuses him of being totally without recourse due to his material devotion:

He is praying, hoping that he makes it. He hopes that this will be the moment his sharingan gets used with Kakashi’s, the tag-team will be better than ever!

Faust later meets Gretchen, with whom he begins to fall in love. He begins to lose that sense of feeling eternally unsettled… with her he feels totally different:

What can he possibly do now?

This is another major motif which is shared between this story and Obito’s:

As per him, all the cases were merely people accruing wounds of loss to no avail; but Naruto rejects this and tells him which enrages him

Later, the Emperor tasks them to revive the Classical Greek Spirits of Helen and Paris of Troy, but this isn’t possible for Mephisto, he cannot help Faust at all. One reason that people give for his inability to help is that he is a symbol of the Christian devil and so cannot interact with Pagan spirits, but he is eager to help and tells Faust the way he shall do this is if he interacts with “The Mothers” - which Goethe uses to designate the preeminent feminine spirit of creation and generation, of which “you’ll have to plumb the lowest depths to find their home”.

which sounds like imprisonment and forced servitude of Hisashi, but we see the same solution in the end, love - allowing another to be as equals.

You need to look at Goethe’s Faust and see the uncanny resemblances in Obito and Madara to that of the two main characters: Faust and Mephistopheles.

MADARA AND OBITO - MEPHISTO AND FAUST

Time goes by and Obito realises he can’t leave this place as there are no exits and it will take time to smash the boulder that blocks the main entrance. Madara doesn’t actually need to break his Will here, as Obito’s hope has started narrowing towards his goal on its own, and with all the Zetsu that surround him all that’s left to do is plant the seeds of despair in his mind:

“To this idea I am committed wholly, it is the final wisdom we can reach: he, only, merits freedom and existence who wins them every day anew”. And finally he says “to the moment, I could say: tarry a while, you are so fair”.

Mephisto which is the equivalent to the Devil, represents the spirit of negation and he is called so by the Lord during their short exchange in the opening prologue, right before descending to make a wager with Faust.

“it’s those wounds that prove your comrades live on inside here. Comrades that you create in a dream so that you can’t get hurt aren’t real, and that means you’re erasing your actual comrades right? Curse or not, I want to keep the real Neji right here”

She breathes on him and he goes blind in both eyes, but he continues on - if anything she has only strengthened his resolve. Care was hoping to blind Faust into inaction, by exacerbating guilt, which is one way care can blind people, but for Obito it had blinded him in another. Now he could strive on behalf of people for the goal of the Infinite Tsukuyomi and alleviate all people of their suffering, regardless if they wanted to pursue life in this world or not. They had only internalised the endurance of the Shinobi to their detriment!
